Three children, including two siblings, have drowned in a pond in Kahalu, Bogura. The incident happened on Tuesday morning in Bhalta cluster village of Murail union in the upazila.
The dead were a nine-year-old boy, and an eight-year-old boy and his five-year-old sister — all from Bhalta cluster village.
Locals said the three children left home around 10 a.m. Tuesday. When they had not returned by midday, relatives began searching for them. Around 1 p.m., a resident saw the nine-year-old’s body floating in the pond and cried out. Locals recovered him and took him to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Failing to find the other two, locals searched the pond. A local man recovered the eight-year-old boy’s body from the water. When the five-year-old girl could not be found, the Kahalu fire service was informed; its members recovered her body from the pond.
The deaths of the three children together have cast a shadow of grief over the area.
Kahalu police station officer-in-charge Shafiqul Islam confirmed the three children’s deaths and said arrangements for their burial would be made after legal formalities.
