Former Pakistani prime minister and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said that if his party wins the coming election, he will ask the current prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, to make him prime minister of Azad Kashmir.

He made the remark jokingly at an election rally in Muzaffarabad on Tuesday, July 21. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was with him campaigning for the election, which begins on July 27.

Addressing leaders and activists at the rally, Nawaz Sharif said Azad Kashmir was like a second home to him. If the party wins the election, he said, he would come here every three months to check on development himself. He promised that if the party formed a government, the region’s budget would be increased tenfold. He also announced that 10 modern air-conditioned buses and 15 mobile hospitals would soon be provided to ease travel and medical care for the people of Muzaffarabad.

At the same event, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said she had not come merely as a guest but was a Kashmiri by birth. Criticising political opponents, she said the fortunes of the people of Azad Kashmir would change if the PML-N were elected.

She announced 2,000 scholarships and laptops for young people of the area, along with new projects for easy-term house building and for keeping the area clean.
