A seventh-grade schoolboy died while searching for a kite whose string had snapped, in a marsh in Noagram Dakshinpara of Kalia upazila, Narail. The boy, a student of the local Shahbag United Academy, was the son of a man working abroad, who rushed home from abroad on hearing of his son’s death.
Police and family members said that on Saturday afternoon the boy and three friends of the same age were playing football beside the house. The boy then bought chocolate and cake from a local shop and went towards the marsh to fly a kite. When the string suddenly snapped, he ran after the kite. After the football game, his three friends went to the marsh to pick water lilies and saw him lying face-down in the soft mud of the marsh. Frightened, they cried out for nearby people. On hearing the news, family members went to the scene, recovered his body and brought it home.
Kalia police station sub-inspector Dibakar Sarkar said he had visited the scene. The kite string was wrapped around the boy’s neck, he said, and no significant injury marks were visible on the body. The boy’s father, who works in Malaysia, came home on hearing of the death; the burial was due to take place on Sunday afternoon.
Many villagers speculated that the boy had been killed by a “jinn” after going to the empty marsh in the afternoon to look for the kite, and such rumours spread in the area. A shadow of mourning fell over the boy’s family, classmates and villagers.
Kalia police station officer-in-charge Idris Ali said the family had filed no complaint over the death.
