A court has sentenced Marius Borg Høiby, son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, to four years in prison after rape charges against him were proven. It also ordered him to pay a fine of 580,000 kroner ($60,848).
The district court in the capital, Oslo, delivered the verdict on Sunday. In a report, AFP said Høiby faced a total of four charges of rape, domestic abuse, serious physical assault and drug use. Of these, two charges of rape, domestic abuse and serious physical assault were proven. He was acquitted in the two other rape cases, while the drug-use case is still pending and is being tried.
Oslo district court state prosecutor Sturla Henriksbø represented the prosecution in the case; before the court announced the verdict, he had asked the judge for a sentence of seven years and seven months.
Although the judge did not grant that request, the court said when delivering the verdict that Høiby would have to remain in custody for as long as the trial continued.
Marius Borg Høiby’s lawyer said they would challenge the district court’s verdict and appeal to a higher court.
