Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has successfully carried out a kidney transplant using an emotional donor for the first time in the country. That creates scope for transplants using kidneys given voluntarily by people outside the family and close relatives.
The vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr F M Siddiqui, gave the information at a press conference on Saturday morning (September 19).
He said a kidney transplant using an emotional donor had been successful in Bangladesh for the first time, opening a new door in kidney transplantation. Since there is no legal bar, anyone besides a close relative can donate a kidney voluntarily.
The BMU vice-chancellor said several agencies are at work vetting emotional donors. They will complete the transplant process after checking the legal aspects. A special hospital team also reviews medical and other complex questions and decides whether the donor is genuinely an emotional donor.
He said clearly that money may not change hands over a kidney donation in any circumstances.
Noting that kidney transplant work had been halted for a long time because of various complications, Professor Dr F M Siddiqui said kidney patients would now receive the service regularly.
He said six kidneys had so far been successfully transplanted at Bangladesh Medical University.
