Rokeya Begum, mother of Jabir Ibrahim, the youngest martyr of the July mass uprising, and a reserved-seat member of the National Parliament, criticized the slow pace of the judicial process over the uprising, saying: “Two years have passed, yet only seven cases have been resolved.” Questioning why the remaining cases are taking so long to conclude, she called for swift completion of the trials to bring justice to the martyrs’ families and the injured.

She made the remarks Thursday at a discussion titled “A Solemn Pledge to Achieve Our Goals Through Self-Reflection and Introspection,” organized by Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) to mark the anniversary of the July mass uprising, at the Shafiqul Kabir Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital.

Rokeya Begum said: “Through the July 2024 mass uprising, the martyrs freed the country from fascism. For that Bangladesh to never again see the rise of a new fascist force, everyone must remain united and uphold the spirit of the uprising.”

Recalling her own son, martyr Jabir Ibrahim, she said: “During the uprising, Jabir, just six years old, dreamed of becoming an army officer. His last words before going on the long march still remain etched in our hearts.”

She further said: “Perhaps the child spoke those words from some premonition of martyrdom.”

Rokeya Begum said: “Some are attempting to mock and disparage the July mass uprising. But these attempts will not succeed. The martyrs did not give their lives to endure such insults. They sacrificed their lives dreaming of building a beautiful, prosperous and discrimination-free Bangladesh.”

She further said: “Only seven cases have been resolved in the past two years. Why is it taking so long to conclude the rest? I call on the government to promptly complete the trials of the killers and bring at least some measure of solace to the martyrs’ families and the injured.”
