US President Donald Trump wants FIFA President Gianni Infantino as the next secretary-general of the United Nations, the New York Post has reported.
Infantino, 56, grew close to Trump through hosting this year’s World Cup. Their relationship took on a new dimension after FIFA gave Trump a “FIFA Peace Prize” last December, the report said.
Citing sources close to President Trump, the report said the FIFA chief is a widely admired figure globally with an extraordinary ability to bring people together around a common goal.
António Guterres is currently serving as UN secretary-general, and his present term ends this December. It is not clear, however, whether Infantino himself is interested in the post, or how far Trump has discussed it with him.
To become UN secretary-general, a candidate must first win the recommendation of the Security Council members, after which the appointment is finalised through General Assembly approval.
Others under discussion as possible candidates include former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
