Representatives of Jagannath University’s central student union alleged they were attacked Tuesday while displaying placards calling for action on campus development demands.
The placards called for handing construction of the university’s second campus to the army, launching a temporary housing project and upgrading the medical center.
The incident occurred as the representatives tried to attend an Aug. 4 event in the university’s central auditorium in the presence of the University Grants Commission chairman.
According to the representatives, they were prevented from entering with the placards, leading to scuffling and clashes with leaders and activists of the university unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. They alleged that the placards were torn up and that they were attacked.
Union leaders said they faced obstruction while trying to present what they called legitimate student demands peacefully. Chhatra Dal could not immediately be reached for comment.
