A student of Rajshahi University (RU) has been found dead in his room. His body was recovered on Wednesday (10 June) afternoon from a private student hostel named Ayesha Tower in the city’s Amjader Mor area. The student, Mahfuzur Rahman, was enrolled in the 2022-23 session of the university’s Materials Science and Engineering department; his home was in Brahmanbaria district.
According to friends and hostel sources, Mahfuzur had been going through strains in a relationship for some days. Around 2pm he was on a video call; at one point, the woman on the call rang the hostel manager’s phone and asked him to go quickly to Mahfuzur’s room (No. 415). The manager and other students found the room locked from inside; when the door gave way after repeated pushing, Mahfuzur was found hanging. A classmate, Moballek, said Mahfuzur had been in the relationship for four or five years, that it had deteriorated for a time but been resolved, and that contact had lapsed over the Eid holiday when everyone went home.
University proctor professor Mahbubur Rahman said: “I reached the scene as soon as I learned of the incident. The preliminary assumption is that he died by suicide. However, no injury marks were found on his body, nor any suicide note. Efforts to learn the details are continuing.” The head of the Materials Science and Engineering department, professor Abdul Matin, said the family had been informed and was on its way to Rajshahi, the body had been kept in the university medical centre’s freezing van, and the department hoped the body could be handed to the family without an autopsy. Motihar police officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Golam Kabir said: “We have completed the inquest. The preliminary assumption is suicide; the actual cause of death will be confirmed after investigation.” The OC added that, considering the overall circumstances, handing over the body without an autopsy would be considered if the family, the department and students did not want one.
