The hall administration at Rajshahi University (RU) has filed a case against unnamed accused over the attack on journalists on campus, which has been blamed on Chhatra Dal activists. Monir Hossain, deputy registrar of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, filed the case as plaintiff at Motihar police station on Monday (5 October).

The university’s journalists have expressed anger that the case names no one, and have given an ultimatum for those responsible to be arrested by 4pm.

Confirming the case, Motihar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Golam Kabir said: “A case against unnamed persons has been filed. We have accepted the case. Work on it has begun. We will investigate and take action.”

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Md Gaziur Rahman said: “A case has been filed at Motihar police station. Monir Hossain, deputy registrar of RU’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, filed it as plaintiff, citing several unnamed persons. If the involvement of those concerned is proved in the initial stage, action will certainly be taken against them under the law.”

The journalists demand that those involved in the attack be identified and arrested quickly, and that the university administration take visible and effective action against them.

RU Press Club president Ashiqul Islam Dhrubo said: “Everyone here is worried. We have all the footage of the attack, and people across the country have seen it. Who was involved is as clear as a mirror. Reports giving their names, positions and identities have already been published. So there is no question of filing a case against unnamed persons. Our demand is that the case name everyone involved in the attack and that they be arrested quickly.”

Irfan Tamim, former president of the Rajshahi University Journalists’ Association, said: “There is no ambiguity about who was involved in the attack. There is video footage, and various media have published the names, positions and identities of those involved. Filing a case against unnamed persons even after this is extremely disappointing. We want to say clearly that the case must name those who face the allegations, and they must be arrested quickly and brought to justice.”

Several journalists were attacked while on professional duty in front of the university’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall at about 8:30pm on Sunday (4 October). Four journalists were seriously injured and several others were hurt.
