A crude bomb and a threatening note were left in Motmura village of Gangni upazila in Meherpur, allegedly by miscreants seeking to intimidate BNP leaders and activists, according to allegations. Recent incidents of similar bombs and notes being recovered at various places in Meherpur district have heightened anxiety and fear among ordinary people.
Around 8 a.m. on Wednesday (June 17), Gangni police recovered a crude bomb wrapped in red tape and a threatening note from in front of a tea stall in Nowda Motmura village of Gangni upazila.
According to local sources, at some point late Tuesday night, miscreants left the bomb and the note on a bench in front of Shariful Islam’s tea stall in Nowda Motmura village. When Shariful Islam opened the shop in the morning to clean up, he saw the bomb and the note. After locals informed police, members of the Kumaridanga police camp went to the scene, recovered the bomb and stored it safely in a water-filled container.
The recovered note read: “No BNP people will sit at this shop. Those who do will have problems. We will not let the BNP have any presence in this village.”
Gangni police officer-in-charge Mujaddid Morshed confirmed the matter, saying a crude bomb and a note had been recovered from the scene. Police have launched an investigation to find out who was involved, he said.
Earlier this month, bombs and threatening notes were recovered in the same manner from at least 25 to 30 places in various areas of Meherpur. In another incident, BNP leader Mukul Hossen of Saharbati village in Gangni upazila was shot with intent to kill. Mukul Hossen is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Those concerned allege that such incidents are attempts to create political instability and spread fear among the leaders and activists of a particular political party.
Local residents have expressed concern at the recurrence of such incidents. They have demanded that the mystery be solved quickly and those involved brought to justice.
