Police have launched a sweeping operation across India’s Kashmir after the killing of a police officer, detaining about 2,000 people. Police say the operation is being carried out to break up networks that aid militancy, ensure public safety and keep law and order normal.

Police constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi was shot dead by militants while on duty in a busy market area of Anantnag on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said simultaneous raids were carried out in Srinagar and other districts on the basis of intelligence after the incident. About 700 people were detained in Srinagar, 200 in Budgam, 178 in Baramulla and 100 in Ganderbal. Those detained are being questioned and their identities verified, police said, adding that strict legal action would be taken against anyone whose involvement is proven in the investigation.
