Along with leafy greens and vegetables, the price of green chilli is rising sharply in markets in the capital. It had been above 200 taka for some time, but with supply disrupted by continuous rain and flooding it has now crossed 300 taka. Green chilli is selling at 320 taka a kilogram in some markets in the capital, and at 310 or 300 taka in others.

Sellers say chilli spoils quickly because of the rain. Supplies of other vegetables are also much lower. Prices are rising for this reason. Ordinary people have been left in difficulty.

This information was gathered on Saturday, July 25, from visits to various markets in the capital.

Sellers said new green chilli is selling at 300 taka a kilogram and old green chilli at 320 taka a kilogram — prices that were 120 to 130 taka only a week ago.

One vegetable seller said that within a week the prices of not only vegetables but of many things have risen. There are even quarrels with buyers over it.

That seller claimed they have to buy at higher prices themselves. How, he asked, can they sell at a lower price now?

Many buyers who came to market said green chilli is an everyday essential. But its price is now beyond reach and keeps rising. How, they asked, are they to cook without green chilli? Vegetable prices are also high, they said: buying even small quantities of two or three kinds of vegetable costs 200 to 250 taka. Things cannot go on this way.
