Sachetan Shikkhok Samaj (Conscious Teachers’ Society) held a press conference presenting an eight-point demand to address inequities affecting MPO-listed (Monthly Pay Order) teachers and staff, including nationalization of their jobs.
Professor Abdul Awal, convener of Sachetan Shikkhok Samaj, presented the demands in a written statement at the press conference on Tuesday (July 7).
Teacher leaders at the press conference urged the government to address long-standing inequities in the education sector.
The eight demands are: nationalization of teachers’ and staff’s jobs; inclusion in the 9th National Pay Scale; ending the practice of deputing government teachers to MPO-listed institutions; removing individuals linked to the former Awami League government from the education ministry, directorate, education boards and related offices; ensuring MPO-listed teachers are not obstructed from participating in local government elections; raising the retirement age for teachers and staff to 65; establishing a system for prompt transfers of MPO-listed teachers and staff; and ensuring full festival bonuses, government-rate house rent, and prompt disbursement of welfare and retirement funds.
Also present at the press conference were Md. Moklesur Rahman, Molla Nazrul Islam, Professor Abdul Haque, Abdul Awlia, lecturer Halder Abul Kalam Azad, Professor Abdul Hakim, Professor Abdul Mafiz, Md. Borhan Uddin, Shahaj Parveen, A.H.S.M. Saidujjaman and Md. Azizul Haque Raja, among others.
