An allegation has emerged in Meherpur’s Gangni upazila that a young man was beaten and subjected to an attempted killing after being falsely accused of cattle theft over an old enmity. Residents of Pakuria village held a protest march and press conference demanding the trial of those responsible and a proper investigation. At the press conference at the three-road junction of Pakuria village on Thursday afternoon, residents alleged that Milon Hossain, son of Mozammel Haque of Pakuria, was deliberately seized and beaten, then handed to police in a cattle-theft case.

Pakuria union parishad member Anwar Hossain, local BNP leader Rustam Ali and residents alleged that several people had recently detained Milon on his way home from his sister’s house in Banshbaria village, taken him to an orchard, tied his hands and feet and beaten him, then handed him to police on a cattle-theft accusation when the matter came to light. They questioned the truth of the complainant’s cattle-theft accusation, alleging that someone else’s cattle was brought and kept at the house after the incident, and that police sent Milon to court without a proper investigation. Released on bail, Milon Hossain is under treatment at Kushtia Medical College Hospital; his family says his condition is serious because of the torture. Speakers demanded an impartial investigation, legal action against those responsible and scrutiny of the police role.

The case’s investigating officer, Gangni police SI Chayan Sen, said: “Mithun and several others of Pakuria village handed Milon over at the station. A case has been filed over an attempted cattle theft. The matter is under investigation; the real facts will be known once it is complete.” Asked about treatment for the injuries, he said: “There are medical papers. He was sent to court in a healthy state.” Gangni police officer-in-charge (OC) Uttam Kumar Das did not answer his mobile phone when contacted.
