Teachers and staff at non-government educational institutions on the government’s Monthly Pay Order (MPO) list will be paid under the ninth national pay scale. The plan is to bring MPO-listed staff onto the new pay structure through a separate gazette by December.

Finance ministry sources said that when the eighth pay scale came in 2015, a separate gazette for MPO-listed teachers and staff was issued quickly, but putting their new salary scale into effect took six months. Some delay is expected this time as well, the sources said, though not as long as under the eighth pay scale.

Professor Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, said MPO-listed teachers and staff will also receive the ninth pay scale.

“We want MPO-listed teachers and staff to be paid under the ninth national pay scale as soon as possible. We are in regular talks with the ministry about it. There may be some delay, but teachers will also be paid on the new pay scale,” he said.

Bringing the 602,359 MPO-listed teachers and staff under the new pay scale will require an additional Tk 13,392 crore. Of that, Tk 12,518 crore will go on salaries and allowances, and the rest will be needed for pensions.
