BNP leaders and workers and those of its associate organisations are attacking the NCP in exactly the way Awami League “terrorists” attacked Khaleda Zia’s motorcade, the NCP convener and opposition chief whip, Nahid Islam, has said.
He also said the present government does not want reform. Nor does it want the rise of any new political force in the country, he said. That is why such incidents keep happening.
Nahid Islam made the remarks in reply to questions from reporters after a discussion meeting titled “In memory of July: the fiery July, the debt of blood and the Bangladesh of tomorrow” at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet on Thursday afternoon.
He had earlier expressed anger over the attack on the motorcade of the party’s chief organiser for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, in Golapganj.
The party’s joint coordinator, Nasiruddin Patwari, said at the time that the NCP does not believe in the politics of conflict. He therefore announced that he would not speak out against any political party in future.
Earlier, allegations were made that bricks and stones were thrown at the motorcade of central leaders on their way to take part in the party’s “July march” programme in Golapganj in the district, and that several vehicles were vandalised. Those involved chanted slogans of “fake, fake” at the time.
Tension spread in the area during the incident. Members of the law enforcement agencies later went to the scene and tried to bring the situation under control.
The allegations set out above were made by NCP leaders. No response from the BNP was available.
