China has announced that it will provide aid to Iran and Lebanon in response to the humanitarian crisis created by the war. The country’s foreign ministry said Beijing would provide humanitarian assistance to support recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in the capital, Beijing: “China is deeply saddened by the humanitarian disaster caused by the war in Iran and Lebanon.”
He said: “Taking into account the actual situation in the countries concerned, China has decided to provide humanitarian assistance to Iran and Lebanon. Through this, alongside supporting the people of the two countries in recovery and reconstruction efforts, cooperation will be extended in improving the economy and livelihoods.”
It was the second time Beijing has announced aid for Tehran since the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. China had earlier sent humanitarian aid to Iran in March as well.
Meanwhile, the United States and Iran have agreed to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end the war, brokered by Pakistan. A formal ceremony to sign the agreement is to be held in Switzerland next Friday, according to reports.
China’s aid announcement is being seen as part of the country’s active diplomatic and economic engagement in the post-war reconstruction process.
