WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to the lowest level since he took office in January 2025, with only 34% of Americans saying they are satisfied with his performance, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The figure was down from 36% in the poll conducted April 15-20.

The four-day poll, which closed Monday, found that an unpopular war with Iran and an increasingly unbearable cost of living are driving Americans away from Trump. It was released as U.S. households struggle to manage daily expenses. Pakistan’s English-language daily The Express Tribune reported the survey Tuesday.

Most of the data was collected before a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner late Saturday, where Trump had been scheduled to speak. A gunman entered the venue and attempted to kill Trump before being detained, the report said.

Federal prosecutors have charged the gunman with attempting to assassinate the president. It is not yet clear whether the incident will shift public sympathy or perception of Trump. But the trend has been downward, with support falling from 47% at the start of his term.

Trump’s approval ratings began to slide after Feb. 28, when the United States and Israel jointly launched what the report described as an unprovoked, one-sided war against Iran. The war has had a direct impact on ordinary Americans’ wallets, particularly through sharp increases in gasoline prices.

The poll found only 22% of Americans trust Trump to manage the cost of living, three percentage points lower than the previous survey. Anger is building among ordinary Americans as the war disrupts global oil supplies.

Since the Feb. 28 strike on Iran, gasoline prices in the United States have risen more than 40%. A gallon of fuel now costs about $4.18. In retaliation, one-fifth of Persian Gulf oil trade has been halted. The price spike has put significant strain on American families.

The situation is also unsettling Trump’s Republican Party, with internal concerns that the party could lose control of Congress in the November midterm elections.
