New information indicates that a “Ukrainian cell” was involved in a series of bombings at government installations in Iraq, the country’s national security adviser, Qasim al-Aboudi, has claimed.
In an interview with the Arabic-language outlet Dijlah TV, al-Aboudi said some new information and evidence points to “Ukrainian interference” in Iraq. Members of certain Ukrainian cells carried out these bombings targeting Iraqi government installations, he said.
He said, however, that further investigation is needed before formally attributing responsibility to anyone.
“We need to carry out a more detailed investigation before formally accusing anyone,” he said.
The Iraqi security official said a small group had already been arrested.
He said: “We have arrested a few people. They have admitted working for Ukraine. They carried out bombings at some government installations in Iraq.”
He gave no details of the identity of those arrested or of the specifics of the attacks.
There was no immediate reaction or comment from Ukraine on the Iraqi official’s claim.
