A mosque imam named Hafez Abdul Kader Jilani, 55, has died of a snakebite in Fulpur upazila of Mymensingh.

The tragic incident happened on Wednesday (15 July) night in Nayapara village of the upazila’s Rambhadrapur union.

According to local sources, Hafez Abdul Kader Jilani was resting in his room after the Maghrib prayer on Wednesday. Later, when he got up at the time of the Isha call to prayer and put his foot on the floor, a cobra there bit him.

When he fell seriously ill from the bite, family members quickly took him to the Fulpur upazila health complex. As there was no anti-snake venom there, the doctor on duty sent him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment. He died on the way to the hospital.

Hafez Abdul Kader Jilani had long served as the imam of a local mosque and also taught religious lessons to children at a maktab. His death has cast a shadow of grief over his family and local residents.

Meanwhile, the disruption of emergency care due to the absence of anti-snake venom at the upazila health complex has caused concern among locals, who have demanded that adequate stocks of anti-snake venom be ensured at the upazila level.
