TANGAIL — Mufti Mohammad Nasir Uddin, who was nominated as Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam’s parliamentary candidate for Tangail-3 (Ghatail) in the 13th national election, has died from electrocution.

Although the electrocution took place on Wednesday night, Jan. 21, his death came to light Thursday morning, his son-in-law Dr. Himel confirmed to Kalbela.

Mufti Mohammad Nasir Uddin’s village home was in Kakrazan union of Sakhipur upazila in Tangail. He had been living permanently with his family in the College Road area of Ghatail municipality. He worked as an assistant professor at Hamidpur Islamia Fazil (degree) madrasa in Ghatail upazila. A scholar of Islamic studies, he was known as a Muhaddis and a learned Islamic thinker.

Dr. Himel said Nasir Uddin died after being electrocuted sometime on Wednesday night, Jan. 21. His body was recovered from a field near his home on Thursday morning, Jan. 23. Calls to his mobile phone from Wednesday evening through the night went unanswered, with the line found switched off.

Local residents in Kakrazan said he was electrocuted by an electric irrigation pump in a field beside his home sometime Wednesday night. His body was recovered from the field next to his home on Thursday morning.

The sudden death of Mufti Mohammad Nasir Uddin has cast a shadow of grief over Islamic scholars, civic groups and political circles in Ghatail, as well as among his followers. Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam, BNP and other Islamic and political organizations expressed deep condolences and offered sympathy to the bereaved family.

Family sources said he was buried in the family graveyard in Kakrazan after funeral prayers Thursday afternoon.

Mufti Mohammad Nasir Uddin had been Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam’s candidate for Tangail-3 (Ghatail) in the 13th national election. After the group later joined an alliance with BNP, he withdrew his candidacy at a meeting and threw his support behind Obaidul Haque Nasir, the candidate carrying the sheaf-of-paddy symbol.
