Mosque caretaker, 80, killed by truck on way home from prayers in Pabna

BHANGURA, Pabna — An 80-year-old mosque caretaker was struck and killed by a truck while walking home after evening prayers in Pabna’s Bhangura upazila on Monday night, police said.

The victim was identified as Montu Mia, a resident of the Collegepara neighborhood of the municipality and caretaker, or khadem, of the local Baitun Nur Jame Mosque. The accident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Monday, March 30, at the Collegepara intersection in the municipal town.

Residents said a truck struck Montu Mia at the Collegepara intersection as he was walking home after isha prayers. Seriously injured, he was taken to the upazila health complex by local residents. After his condition worsened, doctors sent him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he died around 4 a.m. on Monday while undergoing treatment.

Saidul Islam Buruj, president of the mosque committee and general secretary of the municipal BNP, confirmed the death.

S.M. Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bhangura police station, said the truck has been seized and is in police custody. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed, he said.
