Karim Khan, prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has been suspended over allegations of sexual misconduct. The court’s governing body announced the decision on Monday (9 June), according to TRT World.

The body said Khan was temporarily suspended from duty while the allegations against him are investigated. On the basis of the investigation report conducted by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services, he will be presented before the 125 member states for disciplinary proceedings. The findings of the investigation are not being made public.

In a statement, the bureau said the decision was taken on the basis of the investigation report, the relevant evidence, the advice of an ad hoc panel of judicial experts and written submissions. The bureau added that documents related to the decision would be kept confidential, calling for the privacy and rights of all parties concerned and the integrity of the ongoing process to be protected. A special session of the 125 member states will be convened as soon as possible to discuss the matter and decide next steps.
