Police in Rangpur have arrested a final-year medical student over the death of an HSC examinee who fell to her death from the rooftop of the 10-storey North View residential hotel. He has been accused of abetting her suicide through an alleged relationship and mental torture.
The Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police arrested him from Rangpur Medical College Hospital at noon on Tuesday (June 23).
At a briefing at the metropolitan detective office at 5:30 p.m., the Deputy Commissioner (DB), Sanatan Chakraborty, said the final-year Rangpur Medical College student had been arrested from the campus at noon on Tuesday on the basis of a complaint by the girl’s father and the available evidence. The girl had been in a relationship with the student, who had subjected her to mental torture, the officer claimed, adding that they had communicated by mobile phone but that no apps were found on the girl’s phone because it had been reset before her death. The girl’s father had filed a case at Kotwali police station, he said.
The arrested student, however, told Kotwali police that the girl had been his student. ‘Four of them studied together in my batch. While teaching, when I realised the girl liked me, I stopped teaching that batch. Later, at her mother’s repeated request, I taught her with another batch, but then she contacted me on WhatsApp and told me she liked me. I stopped teaching three months ago and cut off all contact with her,’ he said. ‘When the student died, I went to the DB office at around 12 noon today to inform them of these matters, and the DB deputy commissioner then detained me and had her guardians file a case. I am in no way connected to the girl’s death. If I were, would I have gone to the DB office myself?’
The girl’s father said he had filed a case at Kotwali police station. ‘My one wish is to know this: my daughter was supposed to go to another area for private tuition, so why did she go to the North View restaurant? I demand justice for this incident,’ he said.
The HSC examinee, a student of a school and college in Rangpur, died at around 5:45 p.m. on Monday (June 22) after falling from the rooftop restaurant of the North View hotel in the city. Her father is a former army member. According to police, CCTV footage showed a young woman going up to the hotel’s rooftop restaurant at 4:54 p.m. and using her phone for about an hour before the fall.
The officer-in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali police station, Najmul Kadir, said the detective police had detained the Rangpur Medical College student and handed him over to Kotwali police. He was arrested in the case filed by the girl’s father and sent to court, which then sent him to jail, the OC said.
