The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has been given the investigation of a case for the first time: one filed over the occupation of a house, vandalism, assault and the demand of extortion money in Mirpur in the capital. The court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Ariful Islam took the complaint case into cognisance and directed the SRB to investigate it and submit a report.
The court gave the order on Sunday (September 20) on the application of the complainant, Md Mizanur Rahman, also known as Bachchu. Hemayet Uddin Sumon, Md Nazmul Hossain and Munni Akter Mishti have been named as accused in the case.
The court’s order says section 10(c) of the SRB law gives the battalion the power to act against drugs, cyber crime, land offences and land-grabbing. Since the case concerns land, under section 5(2) of the SRB law the court can direct the director general to investigate any criminal offence. It is therefore reasonable for the complainant’s case to be investigated by the SRB.
The order also says that under section 15(2) of the SRB law, the director general will have the case investigated by a member of the unit of a rank not below police sub-inspector and submit a report to the court.
According to the case statement, the owners of the multi-storey building, built on land within the Mirpur housing estate, are Md Younus Ali and Ruma Akter, who are living in Canada with their family. Their uncle, the complainant Mizanur Rahman, has been looking after and maintaining their immovable property in Bangladesh and carrying out other responsibilities.
The complainant alleges that the accused have long been trying to occupy and take over the house, exploiting the owners’ absence. In the course of that, on July 16, 2025, the accused led by Hemayet Uddin Sumon forcibly entered the house and tried to take possession of it.
The case says the accused threatened to kill the complainant when he tried to stop them. At one point Hemayet Uddin Sumon demanded 50 lakh taka in extortion money from the complainant. When he refused to pay, the accused entered the house, vandalised it and took two lakh taka from it, according to the complaint.
The court has directed the SRB to verify these allegations through its investigation and submit a report.
