UP member hacked to death in Naragati

A union parishad (UP) member, Md Moni Mia Sheikh, 45, has been hacked to death by a gang in the Naragati police-station area of Kalia upazila in Narail, it is alleged.

The attack took place at about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday in front of Kamrul Thakur’s house in Panipara village of Jaynagar union. He later died on the way to Dhaka for treatment.

Moni Mia Sheikh was the UP member for ward 1 of Jaynagar union in Naragati police station and a resident of Char-Jaynagar village.

According to police and local sources, Moni Mia was returning to his home on Thursday night after shopping at Puthimari bazar. When he reached the Panipara area on the way, a gang lying in wait attacked him with locally made weapons. They hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him seriously injured, and fled.

Locals later rescued him and took him to Kalia upazila health complex. After initial treatment there, he was being sent to Dhaka for better treatment when he died on the way.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Naragati police station, Abdur Rahim, said the body had been sent to the morgue of Narail district hospital for a post-mortem. Additional police have been deployed at the scene. Operations are under way to identify and arrest those involved in the killing.
