BGB detains one with eight gold bars at Chuadanga border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained a man along with eight gold bars worth Tk 1.76 crore in a raid in the border area of Damurhuda in Chuadanga.

The raid was carried out around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday on the road in front of the Munsipur BOP in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga.

The detainee, Md Mizanur Rahman, 61, is the son of the late Soleman Molla of Pirpurkulla village in Damurhuda upazila.

The BGB Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB) said a special patrol team had been deployed at the border on secret information that a large gold consignment was being smuggled to India through the Munsipur frontier. Around 11:40 a.m., the suspect, Mizanur Rahman, was stopped as he travelled by motorcycle along the road in front of the Munsipur BOP from Karpasdanga bazar. When questioned in the presence of local people, he admitted to hiding gold in the folds of his lungi, and a search then recovered eight gold bars wrapped in scotch tape around his waist, according to BGB.

Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB) commander Lieutenant Colonel Md Nazmul Hasan said the recovered gold had an estimated market value of Tk 1,76,01,230. A motorcycle and a mobile phone used in the smuggling were also seized.

He added that the process of handing the detainee and seized goods to Damurhuda Police Station, and depositing the gold at the Chuadanga treasury office, was under way.
