Trump’s offer of a nuclear deal to Saudi Arabia on condition that it recognise Israel could bring China and Pakistan a unique opportunity. Pakistan’s former Frontier Corps commander, the retired Lieutenant General Tariq Khan, said this in an interview with Al Jazeera.
US President Donald Trump said on his own social-media platform, Truth Social, that for the deal to take effect Saudi Arabia must join the “Abraham Accords.” Through that agreement, made during Trump’s first term, several Arab countries normalised relations with Israel.
Tariq Khan said US President Donald Trump had suddenly tied the proposed nuclear deal for Saudi Arabia to the Abraham Accords.
In his view, Beijing could offer nuclear-fuel cooperation to Saudi Arabia — and to Iran at the same time — without any political conditions. That creates an opportunity for Pakistan to play a diplomatic role.
Tariq Khan also said: “Pakistan may in the end have to take a position either on the side of Iran and China or on the side of Saudi Arabia and the United States. Whichever side is chosen, the consequences of the other side’s possible rejection or estrangement could be extremely difficult and damaging for Islamabad.”
