Verse 255 of Surah al-Baqarah is known as Ayat al-Kursi. This one verse speaks of God’s oneness, His ever-living being, His knowledge and His authority. It begins: “God: there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.”

The standing of this verse in the hadith

The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) asked Ubayy ibn Kab (may God be pleased with him) which verse of God’s Book he knew to be the greatest. When Ubayy named Ayat al-Kursi, the Prophet praised his knowledge. (Muslim, hadith 810)

An account narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may God be pleased with him) says that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi on going to bed at night has a guardian from God until morning, and Satan cannot come near. The Prophet confirmed that this was true. (Bukhari, hadith 5010)

It is narrated from Abu Umamah (may God be pleased with him) that for whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between them and paradise but death. The hadith is reported by Imam an-Nasai, and Ibn Hibban graded it sound.

Why for a child

Memorising is easy at a young age, and what is learned then is remembered for a long time. If the meaning of Ayat al-Kursi is put simply, a child learns that God is one, that He knows everything and that everything is His. The child also learns from it whom to rely on when frightened or lonely.

Ways to teach it

Not the whole verse at once. One or two phrases a day, along with a review of the previous day’s part.

Correct pronunciation matters. If parents are not sure themselves, it is better to teach with a qari or by playing a reliable recitation.

Meaning alongside memorising. Say in a word or two, to suit the child’s age, what this part says about God.

Tie it to daily habits: before sleep and after prayer. These are the two times the hadith mention.

No pressure or punishment. Correct mistakes and praise success.

A child learns most by watching. When parents themselves recite the verse after prayer and before sleep, that becomes the greatest lesson of all.
