Friday holds a place of great honour for Muslims. On this day there is the opportunity to earn reward and draw closer to Allah through certain acts of worship. Four of the most important are the Friday prayer, reciting Surah Al-Kahf, sending abundant blessings on the Prophet, and making supplication.

Several hadiths describe the importance of Friday in Islam. Understanding the day’s status and worshipping according to the Quran and Sunnah is therefore important for every Muslim.

The special status of Friday

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On that day Adam (peace be upon him) was created, on that day he was admitted to Paradise and on that day he was sent out of it. The Day of Judgement, too, will take place on a Friday. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 854)

One of the most important acts of the day is performing the Friday prayer. Purifying oneself, wearing clean clothes, going to the mosque on time and listening attentively to the sermon are all part of the Sunnah for this prayer.

In the Holy Quran, Allah says: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ

Meaning: “O you who believe! When the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade.” (Surah Al-Jumu’ah, verse 9)

Four acts to observe on Friday

1. Perform the Friday prayer with care

The Friday prayer is the main act of worship of the day, so one should prepare for it and try to reach the mosque early. Bathing, putting on clean clothes and listening attentively to the sermon before praying are important acts of the day.

The Prophet’s hadith describes a special virtue in bathing on Friday, going to the mosque early, sitting close to the imam and listening closely to the sermon. (Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 345)

2. Recite Surah Al-Kahf

Various collections of hadith describe the virtue of reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday. One narration says that whoever recites it will be given light from one Friday to the next. (Sunan al-Bayhaqi)

So set aside time on Friday to recite Surah Al-Kahf. If reading Arabic is difficult, you can learn to recite it correctly while also trying to understand its meaning and lessons in your own language.

3. Seek the special hour when prayers are accepted

A hadith says there is a moment on Friday when, if a Muslim asks Allah for something good, Allah grants it.

One narration says to look for that moment in the last part of the day, after the Asr prayer. (Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 1048)

So between Asr and Maghrib, make plenty of supplication. Ask Allah for forgiveness and mercy for yourself, your family and everyone.

4. Send abundant blessings on the Prophet

Another important act of Friday is sending abundant blessings (durood) on the Prophet. Hadith instructs believers to send more blessings on him on this day.

You can make a habit of reciting durood between tasks or in your spare time on Friday. Time can also be given to the remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and seeking His forgiveness (istighfar).

Friday is not only a day of weekly congregation; it is also a chance for worship, self-purification (tazkiyatun nafs) and drawing closer to Allah. Try to make the day meaningful through prayer, reciting the Quran, sending blessings on the Prophet and supplication.
