Muezzin stabbed during dawn call to prayer in Natore

Unidentified attackers are alleged to have stabbed a muezzin, Syed, while he was giving the Fajr call to prayer at a mosque in Naldanga, Natore. The incident took place at dawn on Monday in Charbangal Para village of the upazila’s No 4 Piprul union.

Local sources said the muezzin was giving the call to prayer at the mosque at Fajr time when the attackers stabbed him and fled. He was seriously injured and was later rescued and taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he is now being treated.

Local people said Syed is known in the area as a good, polite and quiet man who regularly offers the five daily prayers and speaks to everyone with a smile. The attack on him as he gave the call to prayer at the mosque has caused concern and a stir in the area.

Naldanga police station officer-in-charge (OC) Monowar Jahan said no written complaint had been received over the incident so far. The matter is being investigated, and legal action will be taken once a written complaint is received, the OC said.

The family of the injured muezzin and local residents have asked everyone to pray for his speedy recovery.
