After a video spread on social media and a court intervened, Sagar Hossain, a village policeman in Santhia, Pabna, has at last agreed to take responsibility for supporting his elderly mother. He has also apologised to his mother and to the people of the country for his mistake.

On Sunday afternoon, on the orders of a court in Pabna, the officer-in-charge of Santhia police station, Anisur Rahman, produced mother and son before the court. The court heard both sides, settled the dispute and ordered that the mother be properly looked after.

After the court’s decision, Sagar Hossain said he had understood his mistake. He said he would never behave like that towards his mother again, apologised to her and to the people of the country, and pledged to provide regular maintenance.

Earlier, on 8 October, a video from the office of the Santhia upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) spread on social media. It showed the UNO, Selim Ahmed, trying to persuade Sagar to take responsibility for his mother, Munni Khatun. Sagar told him flatly that he would sooner take his own life than take her home, and asked the officer to say how much money he must pay each month.

When the video spread, there was a storm of criticism on social media. Moved by the scene, a doctor named Dr Ahmed Mostofa Noman had announced that he would take responsibility for supporting Munni Khatun for life. The matter later came to the court’s notice, and the court acted quickly to bring about this settlement.
