PANCHAGARH — All 38 candidates who appeared for a village police hiring test in Panchagarh’s Tetulia upazila were eliminated after none could correctly write the national anthem, officials said.

A selection test for vacant village police (mahalladar) posts in four union parishads was held Wednesday morning, February 25, at the Tetulia upazila parishad hall, but no candidate passed.

According to upazila officials, the recruitment process began for five mahalladar posts across the Tirnaihat, Tetulia Sadar, Shalbahan and Debnagar unions. The minimum qualification was an eighth-grade pass. After candidates’ physical fitness was checked, they were asked to write the national anthem as part of a merit test. They were given 15 minutes. No candidate could write the anthem fully and correctly within the time. All were rejected for failing to do so.

The selection committee included Tetulia upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) S.M. Akash, Tetulia Model Police Station officer-in-charge Rashedul Islam, the upazila engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department Idris Ali Khan, the upazila Ansar and VDP official and the chairmen of the relevant unions.

Tetulia Upazila Executive Officer and selection committee chair Afroza Shaheen Khosru said, “After physical fitness tests, when we moved to the merit test as the committee had decided, we found that not a single candidate could correctly write our national anthem. A basic grasp of general knowledge and patriotism is essential for government service. Such ignorance of a foundational subject like the national anthem left the officials present stunned.” The hiring test will be held again as soon as possible, she said.
