KHAGRACHARI — A joint security force discovered and destroyed a 2-acre cannabis plantation in Khagrachari’s Guimara upazila early Tuesday, officials said.
The operation was conducted at dawn in the Chowdhurypara area of the upazila. All cannabis plants in the plantation were cut down and burned.
Guimara Upazila Executive Officer Rajib Chowdhury confirmed the incident and said the plantation would have produced cannabis worth about 10 crore taka (about $830,000). Although Guimara is the upazila headquarters, the area is remote, he said. The operation was conducted based on confidential intelligence. The plantation had about 2,000 cannabis plants.
Guimara police station inspector Ariful Amin said all the plants had been cut down and burned. No one was found at the scene. Those involved in cannabis cultivation will be identified through investigation and brought under the law, he said.
