MUNSHIGANJ — The member secretary of Munshiganj’s Gazaria upazila BNP and 21 other leaders and workers have voluntarily resigned from the party in protest at the expulsion of popular leaders and what they called the rejection of grassroots opinion in the nomination process, the group said at a news conference.

The news conference was held Friday at the BNP’s temporary office near Rasulpur Khey Ghat in Imampur union of the upazila.

Abdur Rahman Shafiq, member secretary of the Gazaria upazila BNP, read a written statement announcing the resignations. He said 74 of the 78 union and ward presidents and general secretaries across the Munshiganj-3 constituency, which covers Sadar, the town, Gazaria and Mirkadim municipality, had supported Mohiuddin Ahmed, but the party had nominated a different candidate, disregarding the grassroots leaders’ opinion.

Shafiq said the resigning members were also deeply hurt by the expulsion of 13 leaders, including Mohiuddin Ahmed, an acceptable and popular leader of the Munshiganj district BNP, and Muhammad Mujibur Rahman, a former vice president of the central Jubo Dal. He said the resigning members were quitting all their BNP positions and primary party membership in protest, effective immediately.

Other resigning members were present at the news conference. The development has drawn wide discussion and reaction in local political circles, he said.
