MUNSHIGANJ — A volunteer party leader has been accused of beating to death a supporter of a rebel candidate in the riverine area of Munshiganj Sadar upazila, the victim’s family said. Jasim Uddin was killed Friday after attackers entered his home in Char Abdullah village in Adhara union, the family said.

Jasim Uddin, 30, was the son of Mafiq Nayeb of Nayeb Char Abdullah village. He was a supporter of Md. Mohiuddin, who contested the Munshiganj-3 (Sadar-Gazaria) seat on the football symbol.

The victim was attacked at his home in Char Abdullah village and died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at about 7 p.m., the family said.

The accused are Nasir Dewan, a supporter of the sheaf-of-paddy candidate, and his son Shakil Dewan, both from the same village, according to the family. Shakil is senior joint convener of the Sadar upazila Swechchhasebak Dal, the BNP’s volunteer wing.

According to local sources, Jasim Uddin and his family supported the football candidate, while Nasir Dewan and his son supported the sheaf-of-paddy candidate. At about 3 p.m. Friday, Nasir, Shakil and 50 to 60 others entered the home and beat Jasim Uddin, his father Mafiq Nayeb and his brothers Mokhles Nayeb and Mohsin Nayeb, the sources said. Jasim, Mokhles and their father were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Jasim died in the evening while being treated, the family said.

Mosiur Nayeb, the victim’s elder brother, told reporters: “We campaigned for the football symbol. That was our only fault. We never wronged anyone. We had no enmity with anyone. Nasir, the doctor, and his son Shakil beat my brother to death.”

Reached by mobile phone, Shakil said Jasim Uddin’s group had attacked his supporters in the morning. He said he had gone to the police station to file a complaint, and Jasim and his group were preparing for another attack when local residents gathered and beat them. He said he was not at the scene.

Mominul Islam, the officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Sadar police station, told reporters he had heard a man was beaten to death because of a prior dispute and election rivalry. He said police had been sent to the area.

In the Munshiganj-3 seat, Md. Kamruzzaman, central BNP secretary for social welfare affairs, won on the sheaf-of-paddy symbol. After failing to secure the party nomination, Md. Mohiuddin, member secretary of the BNP’s district convening committee, ran as an independent on the football symbol. He was later expelled from the party.
