JASHORE — A joint forces team arrested Asaduzzaman Joni, a prominent BNP leader from Nawapara in Jashore, on charges of extorting 4 crore taka (about $330,000) from a businessman, police said.

Joni is accused of abducting the businessman, subjecting him to severe torture and threatening to kill him to extract the money, according to police.

He was detained during a raid in Khulna late Tuesday night, said Abdul Alim, the officer in charge of Abhaynagar Police Station.

Police said Joni had been on the run for a long time. In July last year, Asma Khatun, the wife of a businessman in Nawapara, filed a complaint that her husband had been abducted and held at gunpoint, police said. He was threatened with death if he did not pay and was then buried in sand up to his chest and forced to pay 4 crore taka in installments, police said.

A case was filed on Aug. 3 this year against Joni and five others in connection with the incident, police said.

Alim said the joint forces team raided a location in Khulna on Tuesday night based on a tip and arrested Joni after his prolonged time as a fugitive.
