DHAKA — Hearings on framing charges in a crimes-against-humanity case over the shooting in the legs of two Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders in Jashore’s Chougachha have concluded, and the International Crimes Tribunal has set April 20 for its order.

The two-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder, issued the order Thursday (April 16). The other member of the bench is Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmood.

Defense lawyers requested that their clients be discharged from the charges. After hearings from both sides, the tribunal set April 20 for the formal charge-framing order.

There are eight accused in the case, including former Jashore Superintendent of Police (SP) Anisur Rahman. Three of them are in custody: then-Chougachha police station Sub-Inspector Akikul Islam and constables Sajjadur Rahman and Joharul Haque.

Those at large are then-Jashore SP Anisur Rahman, then-Chougachha police station Officer-in-Charge Moshiur Rahman, and sub-inspectors Mokhlesh, Jamal and Majedul.

According to the prosecution, in 2016 Israfil Hossain, then secretary of the Chougachha upazila Chhatra Shibir, and Ruhul Amin, the unit’s literature secretary, were shot in the legs. Sand was then inserted into the gunshot wounds and tied with cloth before they were taken to the hospital. The sand caused their legs to develop gangrene, and they had to have their legs amputated.
