ISLAMPUR, Bangladesh — A union council member was hacked to death by assailants who identified themselves as administration officials before luring him out of his home in Jamalpur’s Islampur upazila, police said.
The killing took place late Saturday night in the Jigatala area of the Jamuna river char in Kulkandi union of Islampur upazila.
The victim, Abdur Rahim, 50, was the son of the late Toybur Khandakar of the area and an elected union parishad member from Ward 1.
Kulkandi Union Parishad chairman Mohammad Anisur Rahman said he received a phone call around 1:30 a.m. informing him that Rahim member had been hacked to death. He said he then contacted the police, who crossed the Jamuna river and reached the scene around 4 a.m.
Citing local residents and family members, the chairman said about 20 to 25 attackers first identified themselves as administration officials and asked Rahim to come out of his house. As soon as he stepped outside, the assailants attacked him indiscriminately with sharp weapons. Despite resistance from the family, they killed him and left his body in the courtyard, he said.
Because Jigatala is surrounded by water, the attackers arrived by engine-powered boats and fled the scene quickly after the killing, he said.
Islampur police officer in charge A.F.M. Atiqur Rahman said police reached the scene after receiving a call from a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader and found Rahim’s body lying in the courtyard. After completing an inquest, police took the body to Islampur police station Sunday morning and later sent it to the morgue at Jamalpur General Hospital for an autopsy. Legal proceedings are underway, he said.
