PURBADHALA, Bangladesh — A faction of the banned Awami League laid a wreath at a school’s Shaheed Minar in Netrokona’s Purbadhala upazila to mark Language Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day, residents said.
Alongside other political and social organizations, the banned Purbadhala upazila Awami League laid a wreath at the Shaheed Minar at Jagatmoni Government Pilot High School at 12:01 a.m. to honor the language martyrs. According to local sources, activists of a faction of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations led by Amanur Rashid Khan Jewel, a young Awami League leader from Purbadhala upazila, chose the Jagatmoni Government Pilot High School Shaheed Minar on central instructions and laid a wreath.
Because the Awami League is a banned organization, no party banners were openly seen, but a wreath in the party’s name was placed at the base of the Shaheed Minar in the first hour of the night. The act drew mixed reactions from members of the public and activists of other parties at the scene.
After the incident, law enforcement stepped up patrols on the main roads of Purbadhala town, residents said.
