BARISHAL — Barishal City Corporation administrator Bilkis Akhter Jahan Shirin has ordered the purchase of higher-quality chemicals for mosquito control, she said Wednesday.

Shirin said the city had canceled an earlier tender for the chemicals and directed officials to buy better-quality products to intensify mosquito control across the metropolis.

She made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion at the Barishal Press Club on Wednesday.

“We want to build a corruption-free city corporation,” Shirin said. “We do not want to see again what has happened before. We want it not to happen going forward.”

Shirin also said the city had decided to remove the Kaunia bamboo market to ease road traffic and was arranging a permanent dumping site for waste.

The administrator said the city would take measures in key areas to prevent road accidents and stressed the need to keep the city clean.

Barishal Press Club President Aminul Islam Khasru chaired the meeting. Press club General Secretary S.M. Zakir Hossain, former general secretary Kazi Miraj Mahmud, veteran journalist and freedom fighter Nurul Alam Farid, Meherunnesa Begum, Syed Dulal and Murad Ahmed also attended.
