2 more children die of suspected measles in Barishal as toll rises

BARISHAL, Bangladesh — Two more children have died of suspected measles while undergoing treatment in Barishal, raising the toll to four over the past two days and 14 across the division this season, hospital officials said.

Brig. Gen. Dr. Mushiul Munir, director of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, confirmed the deaths Friday morning. The dead were identified as Sadia, 2, daughter of Rajib, a resident of Kazirchar Union in Barishal’s Muladi upazila, and Rakib, 9 months, son of Habibur Rahman, a resident of Chakhar Union in Banaripara upazila, the hospital said.

The two children were admitted to the hospital with suspected measles around 2 p.m. on April 8, hospital sources said. They died early Friday morning within an hour of each other. Sadia died at 3:45 a.m. and Rakib at 4:45 a.m.

The hospital director said five children have died of suspected measles at the facility alone.

Ninety-two patients are currently being treated at the hospital with measles symptoms, the director said. Of those, 31 were admitted in the past 24 hours, while 28 recovered and were sent home in the same period.

A total of 341 patients with measles symptoms have been admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital so far, according to hospital data.

Health experts have advised ensuring vaccination for children and seeking medical care quickly if symptoms appear.
