BARISHAL, Bangladesh — District authorities raided a cosmetics operation in this city on Tuesday and found it had been selling import-banned Pakistani skincare products, unapproved cosmetics and counterfeit goods bearing fake seals and stickers under foreign labels, officials said.

The raid was carried out from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 31 on Shahparan Road in the Natullabad area of Ward No. 29.

The business had long been sourcing import-banned Pakistani skincare products, cosmetics not approved by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), counterfeit-stickered items and children’s skincare products from Chawkbazar in Dhaka and supplying them to various shops in Barishal, officials said. The prices of these goods were also being set arbitrarily.

Members of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) verified the complaints based on confidential information. In a joint operation by the district administration and BSTI, Mohammad Rakibullah, brother of the absent owner Mohammad Sanaullah, was fined 30,000 taka. A large quantity of counterfeit and illegal cosmetics was seized and the premises was sealed.

The mobile court was conducted by Abdullah-hel-Mafi, executive magistrate of the Barishal deputy commissioner’s office. BSTI Barishal divisional office field officer (CM) Mohammad Yasir Arafat and officials of the NSI Barishal district office were present.
