SIRAJGANJ — Adarsha Group, a Chapainawabganj-based food processing and marketing firm, has accused the officer-in-charge and a sub-inspector at Sirajganj’s Raiganj police station of misappropriating 13,950 liters of palm oil seized from one of the company’s trucks. The seized oil is valued at Tk 23,21,250.

The allegation was made Saturday afternoon at a news conference at the Chapainawabganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry auditorium. Md. Sadiqul Islam, managing director of Adarsha Group, read a written statement.

Police have denied the allegation, saying the oil was seized as stolen property in another case and deposited with the court, and that the court itself would verify the matter.

Sadiqul Islam said 13,950 liters (75 drums) of palm oil was being transported in the company’s truck from Rupganj in Narayanganj to Chapainawabganj. On the way, in the Hatikumrul area of Sirajganj, Raiganj police seized the truck along with the oil and took it to the station. When the company contacted OC Masud Rana, he asked for documents proving ownership. Photocopies of purchase memos for the goods were later submitted to the station, but the OC did not consider them. He then said the truck and oil would have to be recovered through the court.

Sadiqul Islam said: “On Nov. 25, I went to the Sirajganj court and learned the truck had been seized in another case. But the palm oil inside the truck is not listed anywhere as having been seized.” He said a case had been filed in a Sirajganj magistrate court on Nov. 26 against Raiganj OC Masud Rana and SI Firoz and others on charges of misappropriating the oil and the truck. He has CCTV footage of the truck crossing the Jamuna Bridge toll plaza.

Contacted about the allegation, Raiganj OC (recently transferred) M Masud Rana said the oil found in the truck had been loaded from a stolen warehouse. “Police seized the truck along with the oil and deposited it with the court. The court will now verify what is true and what is not,” he said.

Raiganj Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam Khan made the same claim. “The allegation of misappropriating palm oil is baseless. There is no possibility of misappropriating the oil. The oil from another robbery case had been loaded from a stolen warehouse. It was shown as seized and deposited with the court,” he said.
