CHAPAINAWABGANJ — India’s Border Security Force shot and killed a Bangladeshi man at the Bakherali border in Chapainawabganj early Wednesday, the Border Guard Bangladesh said.

Tasir Ali, 28, died at the scene after BSF members from the Bahura camp on the Indian side opened fire across the border in Shibganj upazila in the predawn hours, officials said.

His body was thrown into a river and later recovered by police from the Jangipur police station in India, according to reports.

Ali, son of Ibrahim, was a resident of the West Bakherali village in the Charbagdanga union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila. Local sources said Indian authorities have claimed he was involved in cattle smuggling.

Lt. Col. Quazi Mostafizur Rahman, commander of the BGB’s 53rd battalion in Chapainawabganj, citing the family, said Ali had been missing for three days. “Police recovered his body after seeing it floating in the river on the other side,” Rahman said. “How exactly he died is not yet confirmed. The matter has been formally reported to the BSF. The process to bring back the body through a flag meeting is underway.”
