CHAPAINAWABGANJ — The government has authorized the import of 900 metric tonnes of onion through the Sonamasjid land port in Chapainawabganj, an official said Monday.
Samir Chandra Ghosh, deputy director of the Sonamasjid Plant Quarantine Center, confirmed the move Monday morning. “The government has approved imports of 900 tonnes of onion through Sonamasjid port against 30 permits,” he said, adding that shipments had already begun arriving.
Earlier, on Sunday evening, two trucks carrying 60 tonnes of onion from India’s Mohadipur entered the Sonamasjid land port. The arrival has driven down local retail prices, with onion now selling at Tk 100 per kilogram, down by Tk 20 to 30.
Ghosh said the last onion shipment through the Sonamasjid land port from India had arrived on Sept. 9.
