Mamata Banerjee, former chief minister of West Bengal, has been detained by Delhi police. She and leaders of her party had sat in a dharna on South Avenue on Saturday over allegations of vote theft, and she was detained there, Hindustan Times reported on Saturday afternoon.
She was holding the programme against India’s chief election commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar.
Many political leaders and activists have been detained one after another in Delhi over the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The All India Students’ Association (AISA) said its national president, Neha Bora, had also been detained.
AISA said Bora was being held in a police bus, which protesters later surrounded.
AISA had said earlier on the social media platform X that because of the tight security in Delhi, the venue of its protest against Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter rolls had been moved from Jantar Mantar to Dilli Haat.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), meanwhile, alleged that police had detained its leader Manish Sisodia in Chandigarh. It made the claim in a post on X on Saturday, with video and pictures of the detention.
AAP’s post said Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah would not be able to suppress dissenting voices. It added: “Vote thief Gyanesh Kumar, your time is up. It’s all over, brother!” The report gave no police comment on Sisodia’s detention.
Supriya Sule, an MP of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), condemned the detention of the CJP’s founder, Abhijit Dipke, and other leaders of the party.
