Yair Golan, Israel’s former deputy chief of staff, has called the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a grave mistake. In his view Israel has ended up in a worse position than before by waging war on Iran.

In an interview Golan said killing Khamenei had not advanced Israel’s interests; it had strengthened the conservative forces in Iran. An elderly leader who has been in power for a long time, he said, can in certain circumstances be an advantage. He also criticised Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of wasting a historic opportunity.
