Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has accused India’s Narendra Modi government of weakening democracy and violating the constitutional rights of protesters. She made the accusation on Saturday over the round-up at the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest in Delhi against alleged vote theft.

“India is no longer a democracy. It has turned into an autocratic state,” she said. She also alleged that opposition MPs and protesters were being targeted and that sweeping restrictions had been imposed across the capital.

She claimed that 254 members of parliament had been harassed and detained. She also alleged that movement had been obstructed in various parts of Delhi, transport disrupted, internet connections cut and young people detained for taking part in protests in exercise of their constitutional rights.

Alleging collusion between the government and the Election Commission, she said those in power were afraid of having to answer for alleged electoral irregularities.

She also sharply criticised those helping to weaken democratic institutions, accusing them of “betraying the country”.
